B.Sc. BIOCHEMISTRY

INTRODUCTION

B.Sc. Biochemistry is the bedrock of the Medical Sciences and the foundation from which Biomolecular Sciences derive their basic ideas and techniques in the service of mankind and humanity. It is the basis of the Biotechnology Industry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology, Neurochemistry and Forensic Science, while the new and exciting disciplines of proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics, genetic engineering, and drug design all rely on the knowledge of and competency in biochemistry and molecular biology.

The course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the core principles and topics of Biochemistry and their experimental basis, and to enable students to acquire a specialised knowledge and understanding of selected aspects by means of a stem/branch lecture series and a research project.

GOALS

  • Students should be able to understand of the chemical and physical properties of small molecules found in living systems and will have a working knowledge of the phenomena that govern the behavior of biomolecules in aqueous and non-aqueous environments.
  • Extend and apply their understanding of molecular structure and function to polymeric macromolecules and macromolecular complexes in order to predict and construct models for the behaviors of those more complicated biomolecules.
  • Evaluate sophisticated problems and synthesize detailed, logical and throughtful solutions thereto, by using an analytical and critical approach.
  • Develop the ability to apply the scientific method to scientific problems. They will identify, characterize, and analyze the components of scientific problems, ask significant scientific questions, formulate hypotheses and design experiments to test these hypotheses, and collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Develop the ability to identify and utilize the proper methodologies and instrumentation necessary to successfully test experimental hypotheses. They will demonstrate an ability to apply the appropriate scientific methods to the investigation of scientific questions.
  • Develop a familiarity with the scientific literature, an awareness of the theories, laws, and methods that govern scientific research, and a fluency in the vernacular of scientific investigation. They will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with their scientific peers both in written and oral formats.
  • Develop an understanding of, and familiarity with, Internet databases as well as experimental and analytical tools utilized in scientific investigations, data analyses, and data dissemination.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of biochemical knowledge and practical skills
  • To develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in biochemistry
  • To develop in students, a range of transferable skills that are of value in biochemical and non-biochemical employment
  • To provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialised areas of biochemistry or multi-disciplinary areas involving biochemistry
  • To provide, through training and orientation, an appreciation of the rewards of inter-and multi-disciplinary approach to the solution of complex life problems
  • To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of biochemistry in industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social development
  • To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for biochemistry, an appreciation of its application in different contexts and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
