Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity in Communication Scholarship

Paraphrasing the words of Frederick Douglas “it is better to be true to myself, even at the point of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false.” Within this context, academic integrity is essential to the overall success of our mission as educators. It provides the basis for proper conduct in students’ lives after graduation. Additionally, many students, teachers, and administrators often adopt the principles of academic integrity as a tool within which the goals of teaching, learning, and research are effective. This knowledge update is an attempt to frame academic integrity in ways that are both positive and pragmatic.  Value education has been given priority by Nigerian governments since independence and is expressed in various policy documents. For instance, The National Policy on Education (2004, p. 8) has put in place a framework for national education goals, in part, as “the inculcation of the right type of values and attitudes.” Those who designed the policy believed that the right values are sine-qua-non “for the survival of the individual and the Nigerian society.” Promoters of this policy from time to time lamented that “lack of academic integrity in the system constitutes a major lacuna.”   Education is peculiar to character first, before skills. Without acceptable character, people can easily apply their skills in negative directions that could harm rather than develop society. As a teacher, I have learned over the years that academicians have spent quality time and resources in developing skills and sharpening professional potentials. However, some do not commensurate efforts in developing their character to conform with the acceptable values that will add to the education system for greater productivity. Teaching is a psycho-social business that goes several steps beyond paper qualification with incursions into the personal psychological dispositions in terms of behavioural antecedents and projections.  The inappropriate approach to the basic tools of scientific inquiry in the educational system also has an imprint on honest academic engagement as well as the question of moral value to the pedagogical purity in our discipline. Today, deceit has become the standard for research and learning, which often affects the quality of education in our contemporary society. In this regard, it is imperative to explore the often less academically addressed subject of academic integrity in communication scholarship. Hopefully, in a short time to come, the knowledge gap in this area across countries and continents shall be given priority by scholars to the strengthening of theory, methodology, and general knowledge based on the subject. To achieve this, the fundamental values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage is the key to this problem of an unproductive educational system.  In reality, the qualitative application and systematic involvement of scholars are fundamental to the wellbeing and professional productivity of any institutional development and growth. It safeguards the physiological, psychological, and physical quantitative approach that promotes ethical, objective, and constructive standards, which in turn guarantees free and fair expression of opinions, ideas, and thoughts. Within the academic integrity framework, dishonesty in the system is considered unethical and illegal, especially the one that affects institutional goals, and that of academic misconduct. Arguably, the essence of education is the molding of values first before skills. Without the adequate value of academic integrity, educational institutions are worthless and the products they produce will be disastrous to society (Saa-Aondo, 2018). Therefore, the ability of any institution to achieve its purposes depends upon the quality and integrity of the academic work that its faculty, staff, and students perform. Academic integrity is one step towards cutting-edge research and knowledge transfer. Incidentally, the level at which academic dishonesty is accelerating needs to be addressed in the educational system. It is better to live with trying to solve the problem of academic dishonesty than to live without trying.  References  NPE (2004). The National Policy on Education. (4th Ed.). Skyline University Nigeria Highlights Academic Initiatives For 2021/2022 Session

The years so far have been a time of highlighted academic initiatives for Skyline University Nigeria. From the stage of acquiring the National Universities Commission (NUC’s) provisional license in 2018 to the commencement of academic sessions and the conduct of maiden matriculation ceremony to the successful completion of the verification exercise and approval of three additional courses by the NUC. SUN has entered its fourth year of academic excellence and has continued to prepare students for student-based intellectual activities and career training, which are some of the visions of the University. During the past months, Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has witnessed many new and inviting developments. Some of these developments include the recent National Universities Commission (NUC’s) Approval to Run B.NSc Nursing Science, Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT), and B.Sc Tourism and Hospitality Management which is currently ongoing in the 2021/2022 academic session. Recently, the NUC began its resource assessment of Programmemes in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) proposed to be part of the courses run by the University. Apart from these developments, the University has highlighted its academic initiatives into 2022. They include teaching methodologies, accreditation, research activities, Ceo/Guest lecture series, technical visits, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with other universities, amongst others. Accreditation Skyline University Nigeria recently received members of the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the accreditation exercise of eleven academic Programmemes. These Programmemes, including Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship Studies and Innovation, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Microbiology, Software Engineering, Economics, International Relations, and Mass Communications, are part of the courses run by the University. The accreditation exercise of the University’s Programmemes is a major mandate of the NUC that seeks to enhance quality assurance, and secure that graduates of the University are sound, functional, and efficient who can meet the challenges of the present and have the capacity to compete favorably with their counterparts anywhere in the world. It also ensures that the University conforms to the expectations of the regulatory body in maintaining quality and academic standards in all of its Programmemes.  CEO/Guest Lecture Series The Guest Lecture Series is one of the platforms set aside by Skyline University Nigeria to inspire the students and expose them to the activities that can enhance brilliant entrepreneurship ideas, to inform them of new ideas and insights from CEOs and leaders across the world, and to prepare them for the global workplace. The main inspiration of the activity is to get the student to hear from an expert in the industry, to learn from their valuable experiences, important secrets from their career successes, their entrepreneurial secrets that can teach the most valuable lessons to the students and help them to develop themselves in areas of soft skills, such as teamwork, focus, fairness, unbiased, responsibility, accountability, and trust. The Guest Lecture series is geared to help students of the university desirous of owning businesses and other ventures to develop the necessary skills required in the business environment, go on to develop their respective entrepreneurial success, and make valuable contributions to the development of the country at large. This kind of event is important for business and non-business students who have an entrepreneurial mind to know how to manage their own business. Industry/Technical visits If it was possible to learn swimming from the four walls of the University without actually being in the pool or taking a driving lesson from the classroom environment, Skyline University would consider students’ technical visits with less priority. While theoretical knowledge of skill-based subjects needs to be supported by practical, the Univesity believes that allowing students to go out on industry/technical visits will provide real-world experience and exposure to students. This is helping to explore them the additional skills that help students prepare for the challenges in the workplace. This is in a bid to develop interpersonal skills and improve students’ sense of innovation and much more and ultimately help them come up with more exciting ideas that will benefit them in the workplace environment and ultimately transform society. Technical visits are an important part of students’ learning. It educates students of the University on certain areas in their discipline and provides additional context and clarity in the causes taught. Technical visits are in line with the University’s mission to maintain international best practices and entrepreneurship development in the students and encourage them to build their different industries. MoUs with Other Universities To encourage closer academic ties, Skyline University Nigeria has entered into an agreement of cooperation with like-mind institutions to establish Programmes of exchange and collaboration in areas of interest and benefit for the different institutions. This was done through the ratification of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will serve as a general framework for cooperation and hence, facilitate discussions of more specific Programmes of collaboration. Some of the Institutions which the University has signed an MoU with includes the Sule Lamido University, International Universities and Colleges (NICC), Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta, Universiti Technology Petronas, Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM), Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA), KEDCO, Food Bank Charity Association of Nigeria (FBCAN), Federal University Dutse (FUD), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Etc. Finally, it’s important to highlight that Skyline University Nigeria is aimed to deliver on the mandate to provide a dynamic academic and research environment in pursuit of excellence with integrity to serve society as well as produce graduates that will emerge as solution-providers. Hence, the Vision of the University continues to remain a work in progress, following new and exciting opportunities for prospective students looking to acquire not only the required skills and knowledge needed in the workplace but also to be part of the contributors to National development.

Workplace Culture: A Sociological Analysis

A workplace is an environment where individuals from different backgrounds come together on a common platform to achieve a predefined goal. Every workplace has principles and policies mandatory for employees. The beliefs, ideologies, and practices of a workplace form its culture which gives a sense of direction to the employees. Workplace culture goes a long way in creating the brand image of the organization and makes it distinct from other organizations (Odedokun, 2017).   Employees are the time assets of the workplace. They are the ones who contribute effectively towards the successful functioning of an organization. They strive to deliver their level best and achieve the assigned targets within the stipulated time frame.  Employees play an important role in deciding the culture of the workplace. The behavior, attitude, and interests of employees at the workplace form the culture. The processes and assumptions of the members of an organization contribute to its culture. A motivated and satisfied employee would promote a healthy culture at the workplace as compared to an unmotivated employee (Adekeye & Ajayi, 2020). Importance of Workplace Culture The culture of the workplace controls the way employees behave within the organization as well as with people outside the organization. Every organization has a unique modus operandi that shapes its culture. Hence, the importance of workplace culture cannot be overemphasized (Ajayi & Kayode, 2020). Workplace culture determines how employees relate to one another at the workplace. A good culture encourages employees to stay motivated and loyal towards the management. The culture of the workplace also promotes healthy competition at the workplace. Employees try their best to earn recognition, promotion, and appreciation from their superiors. It is the culture of the workplace that actually motivates the employees to perform the task assigned to them. Workplace culture unites all employees who are otherwise from different backgrounds, families and have varied attitudes and mentalities. The culture gives them a sense of purpose at the workplace. The workplace culture promotes healthy relationships among employees as no one treats work as a burden. A good workplace culture makes employees understand their roles and responsibilities in the organization and how to go about the tasks ahead of the timelines. Bad workplace culture is dangerous and engenders workplace deviant behavior. It is therefore incumbent on managers and leaders in every organization to develop a good workplace culture   References Adekeye, D.S. and Ajayi, O.A. (2020). Students’ Life at Skyline University Nigeria

There are many things assumed about students’ life and many of them are simply a myth. Several myths about students’ life seemed mind-blowing for pre-varsity hopefuls. While some believed that a University is a place where you get a lot of free time, attend parties at will, make a lot of friends to hang out with, etc. for others, given the level of study and social engagements, students are usually only involved in a triangular life. i.e, from the lecture rooms to the hostels and social gatherings (Religious and circular).  Students’ life in Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) is the overall aspect of being a student; meaning that it goes beyond what students learned in the lecture halls to include getting a pleasurable academic, professional, personal experience and part of what is campus involvement. In fact, many of the university’s guiding principles are based on the importance of learning that occurs both in and outside lecture halls. Like many other international institutions of higher learning, students’ life in Skyline University Nigeria is involved more than students’ social engagement amid busy schedules. It involved the opportunity to apply for not only internship jobs, but to go to summer camps, attend university music and cultural festivals, sports competitions, field trips/seminars, etc. For example, students can take a part-time job as a research assistant with Heads of departments and earn the experience to work with professors and other graduate students. Although these jobs can be time-consuming, it is well worth the investment because of the experience gained and the tendency to inspire and drive greatness. In Skyline University Nigeria (SUN), there are varied supportive opportunities available that enhance the students’ life. These opportunities are designed to stimulate academic and professional growth as well as provide a vibrant and supportive platform that promotes and nurtures students learning, improves leadership skills, social responsibility, team building, etc. Some of these activities are the students’ clubs and voluntary activities such as sports activities, community services, part-time activities, SIWES Programmemes, etc. which are focused on experiential learning and student involvement. They are also designed to help students to build connections and meaningful relationships and help them to find a sense of belonging, to get connected and try new things, embrace change and ultimately find new interests within the university campus. The University has understood the student’s needs and given them a shape to foster career experience, thereby, helping them to assess a fully integrated field of experience across students’ curricular and social lives. Information gathered from students’ life at Skyline University Nigeria has inspired some answers about the meaningful involvement of students in the University. They include; Students Organization & Clubs Activities The students’ organization is a place to get involved in student-based intellectual and career-enhancing activities and training at Skyline University Nigeria. Involvement in students’ organizations is a great way to get connected to the campus, develop leadership skills, meet new people, and have great fun. It also helps the students to develop a range of skills, personal qualities, and experience, which will help them to have fun and make themselves more employable.  Participation in the students’ club activities at SUN has over the years, encouraged good time management that enables students to organize and plan how to divide their time between specific activities. This has helped them to study smarter – not harder – so that they get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. The student organization has varied clubs to help students connect. Here are some, that students have been actively involved in. They include Campus activities, Community development & Students Development, Programmeming, Orator, Software, Debate, etc. Recently, the Toastmaster, Music & Theatre as well as Arts & Photography, have become the latest additions to SUN Students’ Clubs. Is Design Thinking a core capability of Designers?

Let us explore what is design thinking and who practices it? Before we head on to the read, let me ask you some questions! Did you ever think about why a mobile phone needs a wireless charger? Why there is a home for the aged or homeless? Why do we need a venture capitalist as a financier? Design Thinking and Design thinkers: Let us explore a few insights on the concept of Design Thinking, which is gaining a lot of attention in various fields especially in the world of leadership, business and entrepreneurship. Design thinking is a kind of empathetic skill that the thinker exercises to find a solution for human problems in the world of entrepreneurship. IN the process of finding solutions, Design Thinking challenges the established assumptions of an idea/product/problem and provides a new definition to those problems in the process of finding alternative solutions. Let us take the example of Smart parking sensors, wireless chargers, car parking lifts, these are all the outcomes of a problem for which the reasons are complex and yet times multi-dimensional. So the approach needs to be not just scientific but also user/people-centric. Origin and history of design thinking: Design thinking is an offshoot of research acumen mindset. The inquisitive mind of a researcher or a problem solver explores the solutions by exploring theory and practice. It is a continuous effort of a researcher in numerous disciplines such as arts, science, business, medical science, engineering and technology, etc to address real life problems to provide solutions. In this journey, the thinkers/researchers/innovative minds started identifying the root cause through a more structured format from the perspective of human needs, technological needs, and strategic innovation needs and emerged into a new way of thinking process called “Design Thinking”.  So to say, Design Thinking is a solution-based approach to solving business/consumer problems which are coined as Wicked Problems by Horst Rittel, a Design Theorist, in mid-1960s. Wicked problems are by design they are very complex and multi-dimensional and require a collaborative approach and involve a deep understanding of humans. One of the wicked problems of current times is the issue of Global Warming and Climate Change. This is one step ahead of scientific research approach. According to Bryan Lawson, professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Sheffield, UK, scientists are problem-focused problem solvers and designers are solution-focused problem solvers. Nigel Cross (1982) in his work Designerly ways of knowing, mentioned that solution focused problem solvers are “designerly” way of problem solvers. This thinking process relies on generating fairly quickly a satisfactory solution, rather than on any prolonged analysis of the problem. In 1987, in his book Design Thinking, Peter Rowe, Director of Urban Design Programmes at Harvard, focused on the inquiry way of design approach to design the urban constructions and buildings. Further, it gained more prominence with the works of Tim Brown of IDEO from 1990 to date. The process of Design Thinking: Design thinking is a process and in every stage, it has a chance to improve the idea further and better through critical thinking and learning from the outcomes from each stage. These stages are majorly five, starting from empathy, define, ideate, prototype, and test. It is a continuous process and reviews the results of every stage and improves the idea further and then tests in the market. So it is an iterative and nonlinear process. This process challenges the scientific method of problem-solving approach, which is assumed to be a linear process. Design thinking is an out of box thinking and in the era of artificial intelligence and robotics, still it is human in nature. The reason is, it emphasizes the Empathic Understanding of the problem. It means, understanding of a problem from the user/people’s point of view and tries to deal with the non-measurable influencing factors like needs, motivators, emotions and behavioral aspects. Most of the socially innovative and creative ideas like equal paid paternity, 3D-printed homes and neighborhoods, personalized tuition centers, artificial light to encourage food growth etc are the outcomes of this problem-solving approach through design thinking. Tim Brown, CEP-IDEO, in his book Change by Design mentioned that, “Design Thinking process is strongly dependent on creating a holistic and empathic understanding of the problems that people/users face. He summarized in his book that, Design Thinking is a third way of approach to a problem, i.e., it is a problem-solving approach in the area of design and combines holistic people/user-centric perspective with analytical research in an integrated way aims to create innovative functional solutions. Will Design Thinking approach solve the problems of everybody? The brief history narrated above about Design Thinking demonstrates the increased scope and progression of Design Thinking in various disciplines and numerous fields’ practitioners are applying Design Thinking as a problem solving approach. Developers and builders Education Business Food innovation Design Research Equity Designers who work on equitable communities Transition designers, who encourages societal transition towards more sustainable future Role of Education system in fostering Design Thinking Educational institutions, especially higher educational institutions (HEIs) contribute to the research and community development through its progressive and inclusive curriculum and resources. HEIs with the entrepreneurship education can take up academic initiatives such as incubation centers, accelerator Programmes, value based education, innovation labs, and design labs in various disciplines to infuse Design Thinking mindset in students. Examples of Design thinking from real world of business/enterprises showcases how businesses can achieve success with creative leadership. Education system with a participative and inclusive pedagogy can foster entrepreneurial mindset and creative leadership skills among students. To sum up, Design Thinking is an approach to connect unconnected dots. Now, I leave all the readers with few questions to explore: Dot 1 – Mobile phone (Manufacturer and user), disposes to acquire new one/introduce a new one. Dot 2 – Users want – two network connections – national and international networks Dot 3 – Internet connectivity Dot 4 – Banking transaction Dot 5 – Purchase groceries during lockdowns What is your

Busting the Myths About Students Entrepreneurship

Most students are often made to believe that entrepreneurs are born and not made, or that universities drop out make better entrepreneurs. This is widely because the term entrepreneurship has been associated with tech giants like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, amongst other successful business people who have been listed as college dropouts. Such beliefs have continued to work against many University students and graduates in Africa who could have managed to work out their own start-ups instead of looking for jobs, people who could be taking on financial risks in the hope to make a profit. People who could identify a problem and solve the problem with a business idea, test the idea and reach financial stability. In universities, entrepreneurship is thought of as the activity involved in setting up a business, while taking on financial risks in the hope to make a profit. As a students entrepreneur, in addition to developing a mindset of innovation and financial risk-taking initiatives, students are advised to look out for qualified lecturers and trainers who are motivated to work with them on projects that are likely to transform their ideas into start-ups. In order to succeed as a students entrepreneur, there is a need to join a university that transcends quality teaching and awarding of degrees and certificates not only in academics but in creativity, ideas building, and initiative development. For students entrepreneurs to flourish, therefore, universities should be ready to support students turn their ideas into physical products and services.
