Revolutionizing Drug Discovery: The role of AI in Accelerating Vaccine Development

Introduction Drug discovery is the process of identifying potential novel pharmaceuticals. It touches on a number of scientific domains, such as pharmacology, chemistry, and biology. Flemming (2018) asserts that drug discovery is a process through which new medications against diseases are discovered. It involves the use of a wide variety of technologies and expertise. In general, discovering and developing a drug takes US$2.8 billion and 15 years on average. According to Bali and Bali (2022), reports of drug design using artificial intelligence (AI) and computational techniques have increased recently. The reason behind this is because big data, or data sets derived by contemporary biological procedures, have grown to be enormous, complicated, and multidimensional, and traditional computing methods are unable to handle them accurately enough. The role of AI in Vaccine Development These days, artificial intelligence is a strong tool that permeates almost every aspect of our life. It uses a computer to conduct research, pick up patterns from the available dataset, “think,” and apply what it has learned to generate specific predictions. Today AI has profoundly advanced the field of healthcare through the introduction of a greater degree of automation, convenience and higher accuracy and precision in diagnostic and therapeutic care (Davenport & Kalakota, 2019). Bali and Bali (2022) assert that “with the introduction of robotic technologies, medical personnel are being relieved of usual routine tasks, thus allowing them to concentrate more on more crucial aspects of patient care, but the robots are actually assisting surgeons during surgical procedures. In some cases, computer algorithms are actually outmatching the capabilities of radiologists in the detection of malignancy in tumors”. They explain that “machine learning can accurately predict several compound properties like target binding affinity, membrane transport properties, and toxicity aspects, pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamics parameters without the need for an actual synthesis of the compounds or their evaluation”. Modern technology has grown and developed in the 21st century in a way that has never been witnessed before for the good of society. The medical and healthcare industries have benefited greatly from AI and ML technologies, which are predicted to reach a $45.2 billion industry by 2025. Medical staff may now focus more on critical parts of patient care as a result of the advent of robotic technologies, which relieve them of monotonous work. However, during surgical procedures, the robots are really helping doctors. (Alca´cerac & Cruz-Machado, 2019). In many instances, computer algorithms are genuinely surpassing radiologists’ skills in identifying malignancy within tumors. AI is being used to lessen the hazards that humans represent to patients and healthcare workers in a number of areas, including automated patient room disinfection, blood sample collection and transportation, preservation, and analysis (Oztemel & Gursev, 2020). Conclusion Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a very good development in the world of drug discovery. With the current wave of the rise of new epidemics and pandemics, it can be utilized to effectively birth drugs and medical support that will conquer the diseases. Surely the continuous advancement in technology and innovation will only motivate scientists – microbiologists and researchers to do more work in drug discovery. CHANGING GEAR WORKSHOP

Changing Gear; Skyline University Nigeria hosts Easy Learning School and Sweet Heaven High School

The management of Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has welcomed the final-year students of Easy Learning School and Sweet Heaven High School today, 11th January 2024, on its campus for its changing gear workshop. The program is aimed at supporting final-year students in making the right career choices. In her opening remarks, Ms. Sarada Maganti, the Director Academic Support Services (DASS), expressed her gratitude to the management of the schools on behalf of SUN management. She explained that youth need the right guidance to make the right decisions for the success of their careers. Delivering his lecture titled ‘Artificial Intelligence’, Dr. Ashok Kumar, a lecturer in the department of Computer Science at SUN, said the world has undergone a great transformation in technology over the last 30 years. He added that machine learning and artificial intelligence will continue to transform human activities rapidly. He also stated that there are numerous jobs for people who have pursued careers in machine learning and artificial intelligence all around the world. This is because the companies are prioritizing robotic activities, citing instances of Microsoft and Google. Dr. Kumar also explained that it is not only by studying machine learning and artificial intelligence that one can be a part of the global tech user – doctors, lawyers, communicators and geographers, among others, have also been factored in by software engineers with apps like Google Meet, Zoom, Slack, Asana, e.t.c.

WORLD BRAILLE DAY

World Braille Day 2024

The effective inclusion of all members of the population is very important for development to thrive. This is why people with special needs are deliberately being factored into internationally celebrated days to raise awareness of the significant contributions this section of the community can provide. Ideally, their obvious and non-obvious challenges do not make them less human or not capable of supporting their communities. And for that, they should not be looked down on. World Braille Day is observed to raise awareness about the importance of braille as a means of communication. It is also a day to celebrate the benevolent impact of braille, an outstanding invention by Louis Braille. His visionary discovery of the braille system is a giant stride that has enabled the effective inclusion of the visually impaired in planning, organizing and executing public policies and programs for development. The system adopts raised dots to represent, alphabets, words and numbers for easy identification by the visually impaired. Having lost his sight due to an accident at a tender age, his unmatched commitment and vision outshined his disability to become the innovator of the most revolutionary systems in the world’s history. Today, his invention has been widely embraced by people with visual impairments for learning and communication. Courtesy of the braille, the world is proud of academics, entrepreneurs, tech experts, and leaders, among an endless list of achievers. To contribute its quota to community growth, Skyline University Nigeria (SUN), in collaboration with Sight Savers and Kanova Educational Foundation Nigeria, graduated 15 students from its education community program in 2022, which was the second. The students, composed mainly of three different types of special needs, including visually impaired, hearing impaired and physically challenged, were awarded a diploma in computer skills. The Educate Community Program is a part of the corporate social responsibility initiative of the university, centered on educating and training people with special needs in Kano communities. The students were trained with the basic computer skills required for a sustainable income and career progression. It is paramount to keep an eye on raising awareness about the rights of the visually impaired around the world. Their social integration is literally an avenue for more development and inclusion, as they represent valuable facets of societies.
